Who we are
Hi. We are David and Jenni Billings. Thanks for looking us up.
We’re slightly unconventional, but in a fun way. Not like Hare Krishna unconventional… more like… Pippi Longstocking.
Not content to spend our time following American idol, we’ve spent 16 years together involving ourselves in somewhat crazy, always adventurous, and definitely educational pursuits. We’ve lived in Germany, Chicago, Phoenix, New York City (twice), Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and Portland, Oregon. Jenni is a knitter, baker, and photographer while David spends most of his time creating animation and illustration for his company, Sparky Firepants Images. We have three kids that we homeschool (unschool) and we’re all vegetarians (vegan, to be exact).
In October of 2008, we found an opportunity to live and work at an Oregon alpaca farm (because stuff like that just happens with us). Since then, we have:
- Scooped 5 acres of poop on a daily basis
- Learned what to feed alpacas
- Administered shots
- Assisted in shearing 34 animals
- Learned to operate farm equipment
- Birthed alpaca babies (cria)
…and much more. We’ve also learned a few things we could have done without, like what alpaca spit smells like.
It’s safe to say we’re novices in livestock care. For us, it’s been another Great Adventure. As of June we own two alpacas, Missy and Tiberius.
So we decided that sharing our experiences in the alpaca world would be a good thing. We discovered that a lot of people are curious about alpacas and (like us) wonder about investing in them. So we’re gonna tell ya. From the inside. The down-and-dirty, the madcap crazy fun, the tragedy, the financial hits, the financial yays, and what the hell you’re supposed to do with all that alpaca poop and fleece.
Oh, and if we get spit on, we’ll try to take photos.
